Female knee pain

The knee is one of the largest and most complex joints in our body. The knee joint is prone to injury, which can cause pain. Especially often the elbows are damaged during startup. Let's discuss the main causes and treatments for knee pain.

Symptoms of knee pain

Symptoms of knee pain depend on the cause and severity. Knee pain is a common problem.

Knee pain can occur suddenly during too much stress and injury.

Instability or weakness can often occur in the knees - to the point that the legs give way.

Depending on the cause of the pain, other symptoms may be observed: stiffness of movement, pressure on the knee, concussion of the knee joint in one position, inability to straighten the leg.

How does knee pain affect us?

Knee pain is more common in the elderly, overweight (due to increased stress on the joints) and during sports. Knee joints are actively involved in movement, so knee pain significantly affects our lives. When we have knee pain, we can not play sports, it is difficult for us to walk and climb stairs.

The knee joint consists of three bones, the tendons that strengthen the muscles on the bones, and the bone stabilization and connecting joints. There are two C-shaped cartilages in the knee joint cavity - the menisci. Their main role is to recharge the joint. A fluid-filled bursa allows the joint to move smoothly.

Why knee pain occurs

Knee pain is often caused by trauma (sprains and tendons, dislocation, yoga or meniscus tears), as well as osteoarthritis, tendonitis (inflammation of the tendons), and bursitis (fluid buildup in the bursa).

Sports injuries

Knee injuries are common among athletes. They often have ruptured knee ligaments, sudden pain in the knee. Excessive stress on the knee joint, such as jogging, walking, jumping, and cycling, can lead to e. g. წ. "Running knee" (iliotibial tract friction syndrome). It usually occurs in the knee joint area and is caused by overuse, injury, leg bone disease, or muscle weakness.

Other reasons

Knee injuries can gradually develop into osteoarthritis. If a person’s gait is disrupted as a result of problems with the hip or ankle joints, this can lead to asymmetry in the load on the knee joints, which in turn is fraught with trauma. Knee injuries, even minor ones, increase the likelihood of similar injuries in the future.

Determine the cause of the pain

Pain on the side of the knee can be caused by damage to the ligaments and meniscus tears (the cartilage layer that stabilizes the joint). Pain in the front of the knee is usually due to inflammation of the bursa and cartilage problems. Osteoarthritis can cause pain in the back of the knee.

Treatment

How is knee pain diagnosed and treated depends on the cause of the pain. You should consult your doctor to find out. Your doctor will examine your knee, check for movement, swelling, bruising, and localized fever. Your doctor may recommend physiotherapy and a knee brace to relieve pain, provide additional tests (X-ray, MRI, ultrasound or CT), show you exercises to strengthen your knee joint, and prescribe nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs to relieve and treat the cause of the pain. In addition, after consulting your doctor at home, you can ensure the protection and calm of the injured knee, apply ice, use a compression bandage and keep the knee in an elevated position. Over-the-counter painkillers for internal and external use can help relieve short-term moderate pain and reduce inflammation.

What is Runner Knee Syndrome?

Knee injuries are common in athletes who participate in athletics, especially jogging.

Runner knee syndrome includes the following symptoms:

  • Pain in the patella (patella) behind or around it.
  • Pain when bending the knee.
  • The pain intensifies when walking downhill or climbing stairs.
  • Swelling in the knee area.
  • Clicking or crushing sound can be felt in the knee.

Treatment includes rest and taking anti-inflammatory drugs

Exercises to relieve knee pain

Knee pain is common: Out of 100 people who complained of pain, 80 reported knee pain. Three simple exercises will help strengthen and flex your muscles. Doing these exercises regularly will help prevent or relieve knee pain.
